If St. Matthew’s has become your church home, becoming a member is a way to make that relationship official.
Whether you’ve been worshiping with us for a few weeks or a few years, we’re glad you’re here. Membership helps us know who considers St. Matt’s their church home and helps us stay connected with you and your family.

What Does It Mean to Become a Member?
Becoming a member is a way of saying, “St. Matthew’s is my church home.”
Membership connects you more formally to the life of the parish and The Episcopal Church, but you don’t need to be a member to worship with us, participate in most ministries and events, or simply spend some time getting to know us.
If you’re new to The Episcopal Church, some of the language around membership may be unfamiliar. That’s okay! Here are answers to some of the questions we hear most often.
Do I have to be a member to attend St. Matthew’s?
No. Everyone is welcome at St. Matthew’s. You do not need to be a member to worship with us, attend events, participate in most ministries, or simply spend some time getting to know our community.
Do I have to be Episcopalian to become a member?
You don’t need to have grown up Episcopalian or have previous experience with The Episcopal Church. Many people come to Episcopal churches from other Christian traditions, other faith backgrounds, or with little or no previous church experience. If you’re coming from another church or denomination, we can help you determine what, if anything, is needed to formally become part of The Episcopal Church.
Do I have to be baptized to become a member?
Baptism is the foundation of membership in The Episcopal Church. If you have already been baptized with water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in another Christian tradition, The Episcopal Church recognizes that baptism. You do not need to be baptized again. If you haven’t been baptized and would like to learn more, our clergy would be glad to talk with you.
Does my baptism in another church count?
In most cases, yes. The Episcopal Church recognizes baptisms with water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, including those received in other Christian denominations. If you’re not sure about your baptism, don’t worry. Let us know and we can help you figure out the next step.
What if I’m already a member of another Episcopal church?
Your membership can be transferred from your previous Episcopal parish to St. Matthew’s. Include information about your previous church on the membership form and we can help with the transfer.
Do I have to pledge or give money to become a member?
Financial giving is one of the ways members of our community support the worship, ministries, outreach, and mission of St. Matthew’s, but your ability to give does not determine whether you belong here. Making a financial pledge is not a requirement for becoming a member.
How involved do I need to be before becoming a member?
There isn’t a certain number of Sundays you need to attend or ministries you need to join first. If you consider St. Matthew’s your church home and would like to make that relationship official, we’d be glad to welcome you as a member.
