2025 Annual Report

In 2025, God’s love became visible at St. Matthew’s in small, faithful ways repeated week after week.

Through worship, care, service, and shared life, people showed up for one another and for neighbors in need.

We invite you to explore the stories, milestones, and ministry made possible through your generosity.

Rev. Rob Merola

Letter from the Rector

Rev. Rob Merola

"When I look back on 2025, what stands out most is not a single event or program, but the steady ways people showed up for one another. One example is a folder in my email inbox titled “Contact Report Pastoral Care.” Each message tells a story of a parishioner sharing God’s love in a tangible way with another parishioner. In 2025, there were 210 of those messages. That means care was being shared more than once every other day. This is just one glimpse of how God’s love took shape at St. Matthew’s this year. Much more unfolds in the pages that follow.

Questions from our Annual Meeting Finance Presentation

How is the 2026 budget gap being covered?
The anticipated gap will be covered through a combination of existing surplus savings and designated reserve funds, including seasonal reserves and major repair reserves. These funds were intentionally set aside to help balance future budgets.

Do we still have a loan on the house next door?
Yes. The house next door (the Argonne House) still has a small remaining mortgage of $67,509. For context, the main church loan is significantly larger and separate: Current balance of main building mortgage $527,164

What is the purpose of the house next door, and what are the plans for it?
The house has served multiple purposes over the years. After extensive water damage in 2024, significant repairs were completed this past year. The current plan is for the church’s landscaper and his family to move into the home in exchange for ongoing landscaping and maintenance work around the church.

What is the status of the endowment fund?
The endowment fund currently holds approximately $125,000, made up of memorial and remembrance gifts given over many years. While the fund is not currently budgeted for annual payouts, it can be activated at any time to generate approximately $3,000–$6,000 per year if needed.

What are the most likely unexpected expenses in the next few years?
The most likely future expense is the replacement of the older HVAC system in the sanctuary, which is over 30 years old. While it is currently functioning well, planning and savings are in place so the church can address this proactively rather than reactively.

Why doesn’t the church hold onto more savings instead of using funds immediately?
The church believes its mission is to put resources into active ministry and community impact rather than accumulating large reserves. The guiding philosophy is that vision should exceed resources, trusting that the community will respond when needs arise.

What is “spiritual formation,” and how is it different from outreach?
Outreach focuses on serving the community beyond the church. Spiritual formation focuses on nurturing the faith and spiritual growth of the congregation through programs, learning opportunities, and practices that help individuals deepen their relationship with God.

What is the status of the trailer buildings? Are they still in use?
Yes. The trailers remain heavily used throughout the week for meetings and ministries, including Backpack Buddies. Recent HVAC issues were caused by incorrectly sized units, which are currently being corrected at the installer’s expense. The trailers are not slated for replacement in 2026 but remain under long-term consideration.

Are we current with our diocesan assessment?
Yes. The church is exceeding diocesan giving expectations and has been in good standing for several years.

What does diocesan giving support?
Diocesan giving supports ministries across Virginia, including small congregations, campus ministries, and shared resources. The church views this as an extension of its outreach beyond the local community.

Where does interest income come from, and how is it managed?
Interest income comes from conservative savings and banking strategies rather than aggressive investments. The church budgets conservatively for interest income and treats higher-than-expected returns as a gift that can be allocated as needs arise.

Why is conservative investing important for the church?
A significant portion of annual giving occurs late in the year, while expenses continue year-round. Maintaining liquidity ensures the church can meet ongoing obligations while remaining responsive to ministry needs.

Looking Ahead to 2026

In 2026, St. Matthew’s looks ahead with gratitude and hope.

We celebrate Seminarian Josh House becoming Assistant Rector and his upcoming ordination.

Summer mission trips are planned for youth to West Virginia and an all-ages trip to Jamaica. Children will explore the Nature of God at Rainforest Falls VBS, and worship, formation, outreach, and shared life will continue to shape the year ahead.
