Holy Communion at St. Matthew’s
We offer Communion at (almost) every service. If you’re new to the Episcopal Church, here’s what to expect.
Who May Receive Communion?
All baptized Christians, regardless of denomination, are welcome to receive Communion. If you prefer not to receive, you are invited to come forward for a blessing by crossing your arms over your chest.
Can Children take Communion?
Baptized children are welcome to receive Communion. Some families choose to wait until their children are older. If your child comes forward for a blessing instead, they may cross their arms over their chest.
How do I Receive Communion?
Ushers guide each row forward to the altar rail. You may kneel or stand. The bread is placed in your hands. You may either consume the bread and then drink from the chalice, or dip the bread into the wine (intinction).
If you’re unsure what to do, simply follow those around you — our clergy provide clear guidance throughout the service.
Do you offer Gluten-Free wafers/bread?
Gluten-free wafers are available. Simply let the clergy know when you come forward.
What if my mobility is impaired?
If you prefer to remain seated, let an usher know and Communion will be brought to you.
Do I have to drink the wine?
You are not required to receive the wine. After receiving the bread, you may return to your seat or cross your arms to indicate you would prefer not to receive from the chalice.
