What is Fasting and why should we try it during Lent?

Discover the Power of Fasting During Lent and Explore Different Types

Are you curious about the significance of fasting during Lent?

Lent, a season of prayer and fasting, is a spiritual journey where we reflect on Christ's temptation, suffering, and death. Traditionally observed for 40 days, starting on Ash Wednesday and concluding on Easter Eve, Lent invites Christians to draw closer to the Lord through prayer, repentance, and self-denial.

In today's fast-paced culture, centered around instant gratification, fasting offers a unique opportunity to shift our focus from ourselves to God. Unfortunately, the practice of fasting has somewhat faded in modern churches.

Fasting isn't a relic of Biblical times; it has a rich history in America. The pilgrims and even during the American Revolution, Congress declared national days of fasting and prayer. Embracing fasting during Lent allows us to experience a spiritual discipline that deepens our connection with God.

WHAT IS FASTING? Fasting, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is abstaining from food, often tied to religious duty or grief. This practice intertwines with the Bible, featuring individual and corporate fasts. Our lesson aims to elucidate the reasons for fasting, the various types, and practical tips on how to fast effectively.

REASONS FOR FASTING People have fasted throughout history for religious, spiritual, and health reasons. Biblical examples and references highlight fasting for purposes such as being Christ-like, achieving spiritual purity, repenting of sins, influencing God, mourning for the dead, and seeking God's help in crises.

Types of Fasting Fasting comes in different forms to accommodate various needs. Understanding absolute fasts, solid food fasts, and partial fasts allows individuals to choose wisely based on health and circumstances.

  • Absolute Fast Complete abstinence from food and water for a set period, known as a "total fast," traces its roots to examples like Moses and Elijah in the Bible. Caution is advised before attempting prolonged water fasting, and consultation with a medical professional is recommended.

  • Solid Food Fast This involves abstaining from solid food while allowing the consumption of liquids like juice and water. It's crucial to stay mindful of one's health and not exceed a week without consulting a doctor.

  • Partial Fast Abstaining from specific foods or activities rather than a complete fast, such as Daniel abstaining from delicacies, meat, and wine for 21 days. This approach allows flexibility and can involve abstaining from non-food items like television or hobbies.

What Jesus Said About Fasting In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus emphasized the importance of humility in fasting, discouraging outward displays to garner praise. Fasting, according to Jesus, should be a private act between an individual and God, emphasizing the sincerity of one's heart.

Practical Steps for Fasting Before embarking on a fast:

  • Consider factors like health, duration, and type of fast.

  • Seek guidance through prayer, consult with a physician if needed.

  • Allocate time for prayer during the fast.

Don't let fear or inexperience hold you back from experiencing the profound blessings of fasting. Embrace this spiritual discipline during Lent and allow it to deepen your connection with God.
